Steve Harris is Chief Executive of VisitAberdeenshire. No stranger to communications, until July 2013 he was Head of UK Media Relations for Shell, where he had also previously been Head of External Affairs and Communications for Shell Upstream International UK.
Steve has more than 20 years’ experience in senior communications roles including as Director of Communications at Consumers’ Association (now Which?) and Sea Containers. He was also Chief Executive for optical sector Trade Association EIS. A true visionary, Steve previously ran his own business.
He’s also turned his hand to politics – acting as the Leader of Kingston Council in South West London
Best Event attended?
The best event, or perhaps multiple events masquerading as one, has to be the 2012 London Olympics. I could go on forever about why. But the key was everyone working to ensure everyone else had a good time – not fixating on enforcing rules.
Glasgow 2014 should get an honourable mention for the same reason. If we could transfer that attitude to all of our day-to-day tourism activities, we’d be on a roll!
The best exhibition and conference I attended was the 2013 Offshore Europe at the AECC in Aberdeen. It is an exhibition business worth tens of millions of pounds. 2013 was well organised and had a buzz that spread throughout the city. Despite its massive size, the AECC team provided great customer service, making it a joy to attend.
